Newnan, Georgia History
                                                         Newnan:
                         A Tour of Local History

Newnan’s history takes it back to the Civil War era, where it is know for its
many tales of drama, tragedy, mystery, and hope.  During the War Between the
States, many area churches, schools, and other local organizations were used
as hospitals for soldiers from both the North and the South.  College Temple,
the first college to offer women a Master of Arts degree, is well known for
opening up its doors as a respite to the wounded.  The Coweta County
Courthouse, one of the oldest landmarks in the county, was also a war time
sanctuary and hospital. The courthouse is also best known as the location of
one of the most legendary court cases in southern history: the trial of John
Wallace, the first white man to ever be tried and convicted of murder on the
testimony of a black man in the confederate states. First built in 1829 by
Captain W.H. Hitchcock, and renovated in 1903 by the architect J.W. Golucke, it
stands today as a lasting testament to Newnan’s place in southern lore. Come
visit us, and take a tour of our City of Homes today.
